The “girl in the blue bra,” a protester beaten by Egyptian police during clashes in Cairo’s Tahrir Square on December 17, 2011, has become a symbol of resistance in Egypt. The images of her abuse also became the rallying cry for several thousand Egyptian women who marched in the country’s capital demanding the end of military rule.

I wanted to create a work that captures the symbolism of the event yet be mindful to the young lady’s ordeal and not add further insult to her injury. I hope I succeeded.
